I told myself that I wouldn’t do it. Specially because there is already so much written and said about it. But I’ve already had so much fun with it, that I’m going to do it anyway. Which probably does not surprise you.
What am I talking about? Skyrim! The next installment in the Elder Scrolls series. For those of you who are not familiar with this series (first of all shame on you! :P) I’ll give a quick intro on what this is all about.
The Elder Scrolls series (from which Skyrim is the 5th official installment, there are more in reality ;-)) are all RPG games. Which all allow to you to be who you want and what you want.
And no.. you can’t be a baker or a plumber or something like that. I meant battle-wise. You can pick which type of warrior you want to be along the game. Warrior, knight, mage, thief, etc. There really are quite a lot of possibilities.
It’s all about stats.. And I just hear you thinking… Ahw NAAAAWW >_<.. not this again!
But to be honest, the producers of this game managed to figure out a system in each installment which is so simple that even a games who has never played a RPG can figure it out. Each time you level up you get skill point which you can use to learn skills. These skills will, obviously, make you stronger, better, faster, … .
The storyline is different in each game. All games are related in certain way but the “topic” of the game is always different. Although the very style of all games are all the same.
Alright, that should give you the general idea. What Skyrim in particular is offering you is hours and hours of battling, traveling, enchanting, smithing and many other things.
You start off as a prisoner who is about to be executed and somehow you managed to escape. After a while it turns out that you are the dragonborn. The chosen warrior who speaks and understands the language of dragons. Because, yes… You need to battle dragons in this game.
The quest system is very simple, you talk to someone, this person gives you a quest, you do the quest and go back to the person. That’s how it generally works.
The cool thing is, you don’t have to do a quest if you don’t want to. It’s your pick how you play this game.
For example, if you want to be a nice and gentle citizen that never steals and is always very honest, well that’s just fine. Or would you rather be a ravaging bandit that slays every single person in his path? That’s also fine. Depends a bit on what your vision on life is ;-) (guess what I am?).
Let me just show you a video, this will give you a very good idea on how the world of Skyrim looks and how the battle system feels like.
It looks like the person playing this game has chosen to be a mage. But again, you pick what you want to be. You can wield 2 handed weapons, or just magic in both hands, like this guy a staff and magic or a melee weapon and magic. You can also wield 2 weapons at the same time. It all depends on how you want to fight.
One more word on this game. The world, my god. It’s so big and so impressive. You can run around in it for hours, there are dozens of things to discover and hundreds of secret places.
Give it a go. You will love this game… ;-)
