Linux adhoc sharing

For all you linux users and administrators out there. I recently learned a nice trick. All you need is a Linux OS with Python installed.

Regulary I need to share a folder on my server with someone. This always needs to happed very quickly and the problem is that the folder can differ from time to time.

So I found a way to set up an ad-hoc way to share a certain folder.

What you do, open up a terminal and install python if this hasn’t already happened.

When this is done, navigate to the folder you want to share (with the CD command). In this folder, launch this command:

python -m SimpleHTTPServer

On this machine, navigate to http://127.0.0.1:8000 and there you go. Instant share!

You can link this folder by using the IP or the hostname of the machine.
So

http://<server>:8000

Nerd 101 ;-)
