How do they do it.. The Recycle Bin

Yet another windows post on how people manage to delete undeletable things. This is one of the many things you shouldn’t delete from your desktop. The recycle bin.

Honestly, it doesn’t really matter if you have it or not. Personally I almost never use it. When you press shift+delete on an object it will be permanently deleted without being moved to the recycle bin first. Which works like a charm if you ask me. But I do understand that it is less safe… for some people ;-).

So.. Here is how you can retrieve your deleted recycle bin:

For Windows Vista:
Click start and open the control panel. In this screen open Appearance and Personalization and click Personalization next click Change desktop icons.

So far so good. Check the recycle bin checkbox and hit OK. That’s it. Your beloved garbage bin is back.

For Windows XP:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then hit enter
  2. In case you use the standard Windows XP Start menu
    1. Locate the following registry key:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel
    2. In the right hand screen, right-click the following registry DWORD value, and then click Modify:
      {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
    3. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.

    If you are using the classic Windows XP Start menu

    1. Locate the following registry key:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu
    2. In the right hand screen, right-click the following registry DWORD value, and then click Modify:
      {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
    3. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
  3. Close regedit

That’s about it.. Off you go, back to deleting stuff!
